You may have heard the story in the news about two boy penguins at the Toronto Zoo who have grown very close to one another. They came from another zoo as part of a bachelor flock. The zoo has come under fire from around the world because they wanted to separated the pair so they can encourage them to mate. They claim that once they have mated with females, they will be reunited.
There are so many different opinions and angles regarding the two penguins. Some are calling them the "gay penguins". From as far away as Britain, The Guardian suggested that it was homophobic to break up the penguins. The view from Nanny's chair is this - two penguins in one zoo in Canada is not going to make a measurable impact on the overall breeding program. Let the two stay together in the bachelor flock. It is bad enough that they have to live in a zoo. My guess is that they are clinging to each other more for comfort than anything else.
I looked on the Toronto Zoo's website for information about this but couldn't find anything. I did get this really cool penguin font though.

Terrific post, we agree, it's bad enough that these penguins are in captivity, no matter how comfortable. Let them continue to share their time together.
