Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819 and died in 1901. She is the longest reigning monarch in British history. The Canadian government declared May 24 to be an official holiday in l845.
Evidently Queen Victoria was a devoted dog lover, owning as many as 15 different breeds throughout her life. Pomeranians seem to have had a special place in her heart. Read more: Wiki Answers
Queen Victoria was a great lover of animals and dogs in particular. She had many pets throughout her life. The story goes that immediately following her coronation, she rushed back to Buckingham Palace to give her favourite dog "Dash" a bath. The black and white King Charles Spaniel is included in the painting to the right.
