Bret Michaels Launching New Pet Product Line

Bret Michaels, lead singer of rock band Poison, will launch his new product line "Pets Rock" at PetSmart this summer. Collars, beds and toys will include faux leather, flame decals and skulls. One of the dog toys is shaped like a tour bus filled with band members and roadies.

Abducted By A German Shephard

I watched a movie recently that triggered a memory from my childhood. The move is called Grizzly Falls. The story line is about a mamma grizzly bear who loses her cubs so she kidnaps a little boy and takes him on a long journey with his father in hot pursuit. The bear has no intention of harming the child. It turns out she is taking him  to the place where her cubs are being held hostage. The happy ending is she is reunited with her cubs and the boy is reunited with his father. The bear and the boy are sad to say goodbye to each other but everything is back to the way it should be. Dog Bite Prevention Week

The 2012 campaign runs from May 20 - 26. There are many ways to participate. Visit American Veterinary Medical Association for more information and watch the video below.

Deadly Force

A state in Western India has ordered police forest guards to shoot animal poachers on sight in an effort to curtail the killing of wild life such as tigers. This includes "suspected" poachers. It has also offered to pay informants for information leading to arrest. They will be increasing the number of forest guards as well.
Forest guards should not be "booked for human rights violations when they have taken action against poachers," Maharashtra Forest Minister Patangrao Kadam said Tuesday. The state also will send more rangers and jeeps into the forest, and will offer secret payments to informers who give tips about poachers and animal smugglers, he said. ~  KATY DAIGLE , Associated Press

India has faced international scrutiny over its tiger conservation. 14 tigers have already been killed by poachers this year. The black market paying high prices, especially Chinese medicine practioners is what drives the "industry" I wonder what the international community thinks about them giving forest rangers the discretion to execute on the spot anyone who even looks like a poacher?

Eight of this year's tiger poaching deaths in India occurred in Maharashtra, including one whose body was found last week chopped into pieces with its head and paws missing in Tadoba Tiger Reserve. Forest officials have also found traps in the reserve, where about 40 tigers live.  KATY DAIGLE , Associated Press
I know when I hear a story like that, it makes me very emotional - sad and angry. I have thought "They should be shot!" but didn't mean it literally. I hope they come up with a better solution.

Who is watching the dog?

It is agonizing for a pet owner to leave their pet when they go away on business or on a vacation. It is difficult enough to leave them let alone finding a place where you feel comfortable leaving them.

A fairly new website called DogVacay offers a service that speaks to the heart of the pet parent. Rather than letting an unreliable neighbour, friend or family member watch them or putting them in a kennel, DogVacay can help you connect with loving homes where your dog can stay. Watch the video below and check out their website (link above)

The Economics of Pet Ownership

This was sent to me by a company called Killer Infographics. I love these little fact sheets. Some where surprising to me such as 1 in 4 dog and cat owners have eaten their pets food ! There are some product links at the bottom of the infographic.  Enjoy!

Have you tried these? I can personally attest to the fact that cats do go crazy for them. My daughter bought some for her cats and recommended them to me. We have had ours for about 6 weeks now and the cats still play with them - or should I say "it", as one is missing?

Each toy contains 100% organic catnip. They are sold in pet stores and also at

Happy Victoria Day

The 24th of May
is the Queen's birthday.
If we don't get a holiday
we'll all run away!
- Newfoundland Verse -

Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819 and died in 1901. She is the longest reigning monarch in British history. The Canadian government declared May 24 to be an official holiday in l845.

Evidently Queen Victoria was a devoted dog lover, owning as many as 15 different breeds throughout her life. Pomeranians seem to have had a special place in her heart. Read more: Wiki Answers

Monday Meowsings

Photo: Cute Cat Pictures
A man runs into the vet's office carrying his dog, screaming for help. The vet rushes him back to an examination room and has him put his dog down on the examination table. The vet examines the still, limp body and after a few moments, tells the man that his dog, regrettably, is dead. The man, clearly agitated and not willing to accept this, demands a second opinion.
The vet goes into the back room and comes out with a cat and puts the cat down next to the dog's body. The cat sniffs the body, walks from head to tail, poking and sniffing the dog's body and finally looks at the vet and meows.
The vet looks at the man and says, "I'm sorry, but the cat thinks that your dog is dead, too."
The man, finally resigned to the diagnosis, thanks the vet and asks how much he owes. The vet answers, "$350."
"$350 to tell me my dog is dead?!" exclaims the man.
"Well," the vet replies, "I would only have charged you $50 for my initial diagnosis. The additional $300 was for the cat scan."

Happy Mother's Day

Just as I love my children the same but in different ways, so do I love my cats. (Of course I love my children more)

Children will throw up everywhere, jump on your furniture, poop in their pants, and wake you in the middle of the night with a high-grade fever requiring a fast trip to the emergency room. None of this will diminish your love for them. When my son was little he put Lego in the oven unbeknownst to me and when I turned the oven on, I had quite a flaming plastic mess to deal with. He also put a GI Joe down the toilet and completely blocked it up requiring a plumber's service.

GuZoo must be closed

In 1987 a place called GuZoo was opened in Alberta, 100 kilometers northeast of Calgary. They call themselves a licensed zoo and animal sanctuary. Shortly after opening, their trouble s began. By 1993, an ASPCA investigator told the Calgary Herald, "I have nightmares thinking about these animals."

Various groups have united to see this place closed and the animals re-homed to better circumstances. In March 2011 a Facebook page with (warning: graphic) photographic evidence of animal abuse went viral. This got the attention of the Alberta government and in June 2011 they ordered the zoo to be closed

The owners' response was to declare GuZoo to be a church and then filed an appeal.

A judicial review slated for January 2012 was cancelled. The hearing has been postponed indefinitely and no rationale has been given for that decision.

In the meantime zoo owners are complaining about restrictions that have been put on them saying "it's bad for business" One example given by the owners is not being allowed to move animals on or off premises without permission. This hindrance means they cannot take advantage of opportunities such as feeding the big carnivores a farmer's dead horse.

It seems that rather than purchasing feed at approved facilities, these owners are not only purchasing dead animals from other farmers to feed to their animals, they have begun  euthanizing some of their animals to feed the others.

It truly is a tragedy

Exotic Animals in Ohio Returned

Who could forget last fall when Terry Thompson released dozens of wild animals he had in his possession and then committed suicide? Police had no choice but to shoot and kill 48 of the animals that were at large in the community. Six animals survived. They were taken to Columbus Zoo but unfortunately one died.

Yesterday his widow, Marion Thompson took custody of the survivors - two leopards, two macaques and one bear. She drove them to her farm in Zaneville. Sadly, state law doesn't allow officials to check in on the animals or to require any improvements.

Ohio is putting through a bill that will prohibit anyone from owning exotic animals but it will allow current owners to keep their animals. Hopefully the new law allows for officials to inspect these places.

Designer Dogs

This was sent to me by Pet Care Rx. I have to admit I didn't know much about the topic.  Nanny's only experience with this is that two of the dogs I walk are "designer dogs". One is a Shi-poo and the other is a Yorkiepoo. The "infographic"  below contains some comprehensive information. Wasn't it nice of them to create something that matches my blog? (wink)

Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome

I have posted before about Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome because my little boy cat has it. I found this video on You Tube (not Nanny's cat) and while it is heartbreaking to watch, I thought it was important to post because it may be helpful to someone who is wondering what is going with their cat but doesn't have a diagnosis. Nanny waited two years before being able to give a name to this bizarre behaviour.

Please share if your cat has FHS or if you know someone who does.
