The Gift of Giving

Some of you may be considering making a donation to an animal charity this season. Making a donation in someone's name can also make a great gift for that hard to buy for person on your list.

Victory for Toronto Zoo Elephants

This is the best news I've heard in a long time. Here is the story written by Zoocheck.

Zoocheck Campaign Successful!

Toronto City Council Vote
A Massive Victory for Elephants

After an intense year long Zoocheck campaign, Toronto City Council reaffirmed their commitment to act in the best interest of Toronto's elephants by voting overwhelmingly (32 - 8) in favour of sending Toka, Thika and Iringa to the PAWS sancutary in California.

Yesterday was a great day for the Toronto elephants and for elephants everywhere. What is especially gratifying is that Council didn't buy into the campaign of fear being waged by opponents of the move. Council considered all of the concerns that were raised, including disease, and made the best decision for the elephants.

Zoocheck is  grateful to the many thousands of Toronto residents (and others) and to the many experts and organizations who spoke out. And, of course, we are thankful to the exceptionally thoughtful and compassionate politicians who did their part to give Toka, Thika and Iringa a decent retirement in a natural home.
There are still some challenges ahead, but we're confident the elephants will soon be enjoying their new home at the PAWS sanctuary.

Cat Scratch

"Never let it be said SUCK UK don't dabble in science. In the name of completely misunderstanding Schrödinger's work we introduce our newest cat/box combination, the scratch mat. Cats scratch furniture to mark their territory, exercise their muscles and for sheer pleasure.

Endangered Species - Black Footed Ferret

The black-footed ferret is the only native ferret known to North America and is listed as one of North America's most endangered mammals. They prey almost exclusively upon prairie dogs and inhabit prairie dog burrows. These ferrets can be identified by their black feet, face mask and tail. Parks Canada

My Cats Are Boring

I love my cats dearly but they don't provide many photo opps for me to use on my blog; so I decided to go with the flow and catch them doing what they do best - nothing.

This first installment is Kizzie and Sunny not playing with a ribbon I put on the floor for them.

Remembering Chester

One of my grandkitties went to the Rainbow Bridge this week. Chester was my oldest daughter's cat. He was 12 years old. My daughter adopted him and his sister Angel from the SPCA when they were kittens.

Chester's health had declined rapidly over the past couple of weeks. My daughter and her fiance did everything they could for him at home but he continued to decline.

Skinneeez Stuffing Free Dog Toys

Nanny has a preference for toys that bring out an animals' natural play/hunt instincts and this one certainly fits that description. Skinneeez toys will bring out a dog's natural hunting instinct while dogs chase and flip-flop these toys all over the place. All Skinneeez are stuffing free and last longer than regular plush dog toys because there is no stuffing for dogs to rip out! Choose a size that is right for your dog. Lengths range from 13 inches to 36 inches and there are 2 squeakers.

Bergan Turbo Scratcher Cat Toy

As for this cat toy - best money Nanny ever spent! My cats have enjoyed this toy for years and I haven't come across a cat yet that doesn't love it. Best of all, it doesn't "disappear" as so many other toys do. You can wash it and also buy cardboard replacement circles for the middle (comes in a package of 2). A package of catnip that goes beneath the cardboard circle is included.

The Cat With The Curly Tail

Eecheb is 8 years old and a handsome boy.  "When he was born he came out with a curly tail (just like a monkey) and a pretty decent overbite" says pet mom Chrystal. "The vet believes that his tail was probably broken either in his mother's womb, or when she gave birth to him and his siblings."

Eecheb's curly tail may have been an accident but did you know that curly tailed cats can also be a genetic mutation or as the result of breeding for this feature?
There are multiple types of curly-tailed cats whose tails loop over the back or form tight corkscrews. One such mutation has been developed into the American Ringtail, but others have been regarded as curiosities and not perpetuated. The gene(s) responsible have not been fully investigated. Wikipedia

Monday Meowsings

Puddin’ never sees his mother or any of the other kittens from his litter. Why should he? He’s off the teat. He’s out there in the world. Clawing couches. Pooping on tables. No one jumps all up Puddin’s a** for “missing his grandfather’s eightieth birthday party” or “walking around on all fours like a cat all day.” Unlike my stupid family. ~ Everything I Know About Love I Learned From Cats

Remembrance Day - Canada

Every November 11 Canadians pause to honour all the men and women who have fought for and in many cases died for our country. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we stop what we are doing and participate in a nation-wide moment of silence for our fallen soldiers.

Bird Watching

You don't have to know me for long before catching on how much Nanny loves birds. I live on the top floor of a building that is somewhat of an L-shape so I'm at roof level. There is a little vent in the side of the building where starlings had built a nest earlier in the summer. Several birds were congregating on the roof and going in and out of the vent feeding their babies.

There seems to be only one now who comes to sit on the roof near the vent in the morning. Of course, I can't know if it is the same bird.  Starlings may not be the prettiest bird but they have such a beautiful repertoire of sound. This provides a natural source of entertainment for my cat who lays low in the windows and chatter at the bird. That it is a double dose of entertainment for me.

Vote Right Meow

Nanny will not tell you how you should vote. I just want to encourage everyone to go out and vote. The election is close enough that every vote counts.

My Senior Cat

In people years, my girl cat and I are the same age. She is around 11 years old now and showing signs of aging. She used to love jumping up on the bathroom sink and drinking out of the tap. In my current apartment she can no longer do that because jumping has become difficult for her.

She used to jump from the floor to the sink but when she started finding it difficult to make the jump she would go from the floor to the toilet seat and then to the sink. As she got older she would go from the floor to the toilet seat to the toilet tank and then to the sink. The space between the toilet and sink in my new apartment is too wide for her to navigate even from the lid. She only tried once. Maybe I could try lifting her up there and see how that goes? Poor old gal!

On the Menu: Endangered Animals Bushmeat Crisis

They call it "bushmeat". For those of us who can pop into our local grocery store it is impossible to wrap our heads around killing a chimpanzee for food. For those who rely on it for a source of food or a source of income (or both) it is isn't given any more consideration than you or I would give to choosing between chicken or beef at the supermarket. It is their normal.
The primatologist Dr Jane Goodall has estimated that for every chimp orphan that is sold as a pet, 10 others from its family group will have been killed.
