Gorilla Doctors

This week marked the anniversary of the death of Dian Fossey. On December 26, 1985 she was murdered in her cabin, paying the ultimate price for protecting Mountain Gorillas.

Boxing Day

We are fortunate here in Canada to have Boxing Day, the day following Christmas, as a holiday. For workers, it is a paid holiday. Essential workers like nurses for example will be paid time and a half if they work today. The malls are open and the sales are inviting. A few years ago they stopped refunds and exchanges on this day though and make customers wait until December 29th for that. It is a nice tradition all around. Cats, however, know that every day is boxing day.

Undercover Mouse

We have one of these at our house.

Just as the name implies, undercover mouse moves quickly; randomly speeding, slowing and reversing direction under its durable nylon cover - the hidden mouse skitters furtively just out of your cat's view. In fact, its movements are so real you and your cat will swear there's a live mouse in the house. Here's the secret to its success undercover mouse's stealthy movements serve to peak your hunter/predator's instinct to secure the catch.

Endangered Species: Macaws

"There are 17 species of macaws, and several are endangered. These playful birds are popular pets, and many are illegally trapped for that trade. The rain forest homes of many species are also disappearing at an alarming rate. Hyacinth, red-fronted, and blue-throated macaws are seriously endangered. The glaucus macaw and Spix's macaw may already be extinct in the wild."National Geographic

"Pay no attention to that cat behind the curtain." Cats are good at hiding in plain sight. Believe it or not, this actually works.

To Clump Or Not To Clump?

I accidentally purchased non-clumping litter and I didn't like it.  It stayed wet from pee, smelled bad and was difficult to get out of the litter box. I immediately wondered why anyone would prefer it over clumping litter.

I learned from my investigation there is a lot more to it than just choosing between clumping or non-clumping litter. There are several different types of litter to choose from. Each has its advantages and disadvantages and prices vary.

Endangered Species: Caribou

When I'm searching my change purse and don't have my glasses on, I can always spot a quarter (Canadian) by the caribou on the "heads" side. It is sad to think that some day the quarter might be the only place we will see a caribou.

The Woodland Caribou living in Alberta, Canada are at most risk for extinction. They are classified as "very unlikely to survive".

There are few things more joyful to behold than an animal with the zoomies. They come under the category "the best things in life are free". Whether it is a cat or a dog, it is something we never grow tired of watching.

The only difference between cat zoomies and dog zoomies is dogs generally stick to ground level. Cats on the other hand are everywhere up to and including next to the ceiling. Any pictures or nick-nacks on tables  or shelves are mere collateral damage.
