Is Snow A Drug For Dogs?

I love to watch dogs in snow! There must be something in that cold white stuff that makes them lose their little minds.

Emperor Tamarin

Cute, huh? This small primate's name comes from the belief that its long white mustache bore resemblance to Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany. Located mainly in the southwest Amazon region, they are currently considered "least concerned" on the ICUN Red List. However, being on the list at all means they need to be carefully monitored.  Conservation efforts are in place in Peru and Bolivia where they are protected.

Sunday's Child February 24, 2013

This one is dedicated to Pat Derby who passed away February 15, 2013. Pat dedicated her life to rescuing performing animals and providing a loving place for them to live in a free and more suitable environment. You will notice in the circus clip the elephants are rocking and swaying. That is a sign of extreme stress. When they are at PAWS they are relaxed and happy. Let's carry on Pat's work to free animals from this horrid life of servitude where business people are using them to make money. It is wrong. Plain and simple. I've always said that when God gave man dominion over animals, performing in a circus or being locked up is not what He had in mind.

Menopause Kitty Update

Earlier in the week I posted a story about my food addicted older cat (link). I had been giving her 1/4 can of Fancy Feast twice a day in addition to her dry food but she wasn't letting up on me during the hours between servings.

My Police Dog Love Story

One night a few years ago I woke up to sounds in the hall outside my bedroom. My daughter had been out for the evening so at first I thought she must have come home. I looked up and saw a man standing in the door way of my room. My brain went to work quickly to solve the mystery - I don't know who this is. But wait, I must know who he is because he is in my home. NO! What the hell is he doing in my home?

Remembering Pat Derby

I am deeply saddened about the death of Pat Derby. I didn't know her personally but I admired her work as a co-founder of the PAWS Sanctuary in California. You will find a tribute to Pat and information on memorials and where to send condolences on

Pictured above: PAT DERBY WITH "71"
"It had to begin with elephants. I was born in love with all elephants: not for a reason that I know, not because of any of their individual qualities,  - wisdom, kindness, power, grace, patience, loyalty but for what they are altogether, for their entire elephantness." PAT DERBY, 1976, "THE LADY _ HER TIGER"

Do Cats Go Through Menopause?

My oldest cat is about to give me fits. She is addicted to food and has been keeping after me for hours between meals. Her behavior is similar to being in heat. As well as being extremely annoying, it also makes me wonder - do female cats go through menopause like their human counterparts?

Monday Meowsings

If you wonder what your cats do at night while you are sleeping, it isn't much different than what you see during the day. It is just prettier by the moonlight.

Chimp Haven

Chimp Haven has published a new video. What I like about this sanctuary is how they provide a free and natural environment for chimpanzees that have lived for decades undergoing experiments in medical research labs. Many come to them infected with HIV and hepatitis. A permanent end is in sight for this barbaric practice. I hope to see it soon!

Animal Idioms We Should Stop Using

"Blind as a bat"

Referring to a person who cannot see well. However, most bats see very well, even in dim light. They also use echolocation to get around in the dark. It is their seemingly erratic flight pattern that leads people to the false conclusion that they cannot see.

It is also unflattering to a person with poor vision so I vote for losing this one. What do you think?

February Is Pet Dental Health Month

It's more serious than you may know. Sure, we want our pets to have clean teeth and fresh breath but we are also concerned about their overall health. It goes beyond tarter and tooth decay. Poor dental hygiene can lead to heart, liver and kidney problems.

Common US/Canada Endangered Species

Besides the longest unprotected border in the world Canadians and Americans share many things in common. There is an expression "when the US sneezes Canada gets a cold". I would argue it must also be the other way around as well. As neighbours we live in the spirit of harmony and cooperation.

A Cold Day In Hell

On October 25, 2011 Toronto City Council passed a motion to send 3 Toronto Zoo elephants to the PAWS animal sanctuary in California. Celebrity Bob Barker offered to pay all expenses for the transport.  Why are they still here? It seems like the Zoo has decided it will be a cold day in hell before they will give the elephants up. At this time  of year in Southern Ontario it already is a cold day in hell for Iringa, Toka and Thika.

The chain bracelets, clasped around their thick, wrinkly ankles, (pictured above) are part of training for the big move south. The elephants have been wearing them daily since last January.

Unlike dogs, cats do not have a sweet tooth. Scientists believe this is due to a mutation in a key taste receptor.

Something Different to Play With

I thought I'd switch it up a bit and give Sunny something new to play with (in?). I was sure he would dive into the pile and scatter paper everywhere. He decided it would be a great place to lay down and go to sleep. He did fluff it up first though.

Awww I woke him up!

Animal Idioms We Should Stop Using

"Not enough room to swing a cat"

It may also come from a naval term referring to an instrument for punishment - the cat o' nine tails. However, it is better known as meaning "an awkwardly small, confined space" and conjures an imagine of someone testing that by actually swinging a cat.

Either way, I vote for taking it out of the vernacular. What do you think?
