Kitty Caped Crusader

So I went to my room last night to get ready for bed and I could see Sunny sitting at the top of my bed, erect like a statue, head right up staring intently at the window. I thought he must have spotted a fly or a moth so I went to the window to investigate. Nothing. Then his head started moving around as if he was tracking something that was moving quickly. He jumped up and put his front paws up on my headboard and continued moving his head back and forth and up and down. He can't get in the window because there is no window sill to sit on.

My brave little man, Sunny

I thought he was hallucinating because that happens sometimes with Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome, which he has. I decided to humour him so I moved in beside him and put my hand on his shoulder and began talking to him. Touch and talking to him usually brings him back to reality. I'm saying things like "whatcha lookin at Sun? Is there something outside? Hmm? What is it baby?"

Dangerous Gaps In Exotic Pet Regulations Pt. 1

I hate the term "exotic pets". "Exotic" makes them sound alluring and  desirable to possess. As for "pets" - the animals that come under this category are light years away from being pets.

I really like the term "companion animal" for pets as it denotes a relationship between human and animal and also provides an appropriate distinction between tamed domestic animals and wild animals.

Is this a pet? A companion animal?

The Stolen Dog

The Stolen Dog is a true story written by Tricia O'Malley that takes the reader right along with Tricia and her husband Josh from the terrifying moment they discover their dog Briggs had been stolen from their own back yard. They meet some helpful and not so helpful folks along the way on their journey to bring their beloved dog safely home again. Part of the proceeds from the book go to animal rescues and animal shelters.

This is one of my favourite photos of my little boy cat Sunny. He is standing on a chair to look out a window.

August is Senior Pets Month

I have a senior cat. Miss Kizzy is a 12 year old Maine Coon. She is in good health other than being a bit overweight. She can't jump up too high any more and walks a bit stiffly sometimes if she has been laying down for a while. She can still take off after her brother if he is bothering her though. She is the only cat I know that likes her belly rubbed.

She is also an old curmudgeon. Not every cat likes to be handled and she is one of them - unless you have something she can eat and then it's a different story. She's my old curmudgeon and she loves me and I love her.

Kizzy is a large breed cat - we say she is big-furred

Monday Meowsings

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.

It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.”

Endangered Species: Little Brown Bat

Little brown bats weigh between 4 - 11 grams (0.14 - 0.38 ounces). They are 4 - 5 cm. (1.5 - 1.9 in.) long, and have a wingspan of 22 - 27 cm. (8.6 - 10.6 in.). They feed at night on insects and are most active in the two or three hours after sunset. The female usually gives birth to only one young, which is able to fly and obtain its own food when just three weeks old.
